Ingredients
Double Chocolate Sourdough Bread – This Chocolate Sourdough Loaf is packed with rich chocolatey flavor from unsweetened cocoa powder and dark chocolate chips.
Large eggs – Helps to bind the French toast bake together
Milk – I used whole milk for this recipe, but any dairy and non-dairy option, like almond milk, will work.
Heavy Whipping Cream – Adding heavy cream to the milk mixture gives this breakfast bake a custard-like texture, almost like a bread pudding.
Maple Syrup – I love using this natural sweetener to give this special treat just a touch of extra sweetness.
Vanilla – I used vanilla extract, but use what you have.
Ground Cinnamon – The chocolate mixture works perfectly with ground cinnamon. Each bite tastes like Mexican hot chocolate, yum!
Salt – Just a pinch of salt will help elevate the sweetness of this Sourdough Chocolate French Toast Casserole.

How to Make Chocolate Sourdough French Toast Casserole
Bake a loaf of my Double Chocolate Espresso Sourdough Bread. For this recipe, you can use a fresh loaf or a loaf that is starting to go stale.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees f.
Cube the Chocolate Sourdough Bread into bite-sized pieces, about 1-inch cubes. Sometimes I will remove really tough pieces of the crust. Place in a large bowl and set to the side.
In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until combined.
Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes. Stir the mixture with a rubber spatula until all of the bread pieces have soaked in the liquids.
Grease a 9×13 baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
Pour the mixture into the prepared casserole dish and place it into the preheated oven.
Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until the middle is cooked through with no more liquids and the top of the casserole is golden brown and slightly crisp.
Serve hot.
How to Serve
Chocolate Sourdough French Toast Casserole is absolutely scrumptious when served with classic toppings like melted butter and real maple syrup. Garnish with an array of fresh fruits like fresh raspberries, ripe strawberries, and juicy blueberries for a pop of color and sweetness.
Sprinkle a dusting of cinnamon sugar for added texture and richness.
For the ultimate indulgence, drizzle with velvety chocolate sauce, serve alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and top with a few white chocolate curls.
How to Store
Store leftover French toast casserole in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Reheat scoops of Chocolate Sourdough French Toast Casserole in the microwave, heating at 30-second increments until it is heated through.
To reheat the whole casserole, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake covered for 15-20 minutes, or until heated through.
Helpful Tips:
If the top of the Chocolate Sourdough French Toast is browning too much before it has finished baking, cover the top with aluminum foil and continue to bake.
If you only have 1/2 of a loaf, cut the recipe in half and bake the casserole in an 8×8 baking dish for the same amount of time.
Happy baking!

I used your Chai Sourdough Loaf instead of your chocolate loaf and it was delightful! Such a great use for leftover bread.
